Giovanni Papini was born in 1881 in Florence. From an early age he was a voracious reader of the classics, and as a teen he expanded to philosophy, theory, and politics. Though his mother was a devout Catholic, he followed in his father’s footsteps as an atheist. He was deeply self-conscious of his appearance, referring to himself as the “ugliest man in Italy.” At fifteen years old, however, he vowed to achieve fame. (De Filippis, 352).
In 1903 Papini co-founded Il Leonardo, a literary magazine that would become a key player in the Italian pragmatism movement. He married Giacinta Giovagnoli in 1907, and they had two children. He became well-known for the avant-garde polemics and biting criticism in his work. Papini gained a notable following of other writers as they wrote and edited journals out of cafes in Florence. He had some early success from publishing his autobiographical novel, Un Uomo Finito (1912; The Failure), which depicted his isolated childhood and exploration of nihilism (Allister).
After Il Leonardo folded, he became a follower of Filippo Tommaso Marinetti’s futurism movement, and in 1913 he founded the Futurist journal Lacerba. Marinetti and Papini had an artistic and political rivalry, however, and when Papini began publishing less about Marinetti and his politics in Lacerba, that rift only widened. It was around this time that Papini and Mina Loy began an affair, which further strained his relationship with Marinetti. Though Loy felt a deep connection to Papini, the relationship would ultimately end with Loy brokenhearted. Their love affair would inspire Loy’s “Feminist Manifesto,” “Futurist Dialogue,” and most notably, the poems in “Song to Joannes” (Burke 180).
As his support of fascism grew, Papini supported Italy’s entry into World War I in 1915, and he began publishing more pieces defending Italian politics and culture. In 1920 he reconverted to Catholicism and began writing the book Storia di Cristo (1921; Life of Christ), which chronicled his return to religion as it emulated the life of Jesus (Allister). By the 1930s he had become more conservative both politically and artistically. He was an ardent supporter of Mussolini, and even dedicating his literary history Storia della Literatura Italiana (1937) to him. Papini became a prominent figure in the Return to Order art movement, which sought a return to more traditional art styles.
With the support of the Italian government and the Catholic church, Papini was able to gain teaching positions at universities and support from publishers (Allister). There is evidence he was divided between his faith and nationalism, however. He attempted to discuss the future of Christianity with Mussolini and published essays condemning Nazi racism, all the while expressing his support for Italian fascists in the Spanish Civil War (Adamson 13). In 1943 he became a Franciscan friar. His health began to decline sharply in the 1950s, but he continued to write up until his death. By the time of his death in 1956, he had authored dozens of books of prose and verse, founded numerous literary journals, and had work translated into multiple languages (Allister).
